Lucy Delius

I am so excited to introduce our second This Mood, That Month muse and someone who I am personally obsessed with; the one and only, Lucy Delius.

Lucy’s work embodies everything I admire in fine jewellery; delicately bold with a rare ability to strike that perfect balance between antique romance and modern edge. Based in Notting Hill, we sat down in her studio to chat all things LD.

What inspired you to begin designing fine jewellery?

I have always had an affinity with Antique jewellery, but found it difficult to find pieces that sat alongside my jewellery collection - whether that was because of varying gold karats or the styles not sitting together nicely. I wanted to create pieces that looked like they could be antique, whilst also feeling modern at the same time - it was something I couldn’t really find anywhere else. Since the very beginning of my brand, my goal has been to create pieces that you wear all of the time that sit seamlessly with jewels you already own.

My brand is rooted in my obsession with Victorian jewellery, particularly gentleman’s watch chains. I own a variety of antique watch chains and this was the basis for my first design - The Trombone Chain. I am always celebrating the origin story of my designs, rather than concealing their provenance, and from there have continued to reinvent the essence of the old and make it new within my collections

What do you consider your signature style ‘formula’? How does Jewellery play into this?

I combine family heirlooms, vintage pieces and my personal designs - that’s really the basis of my brand; creating pieces are at home alongside inherited, collected or beloved pieces.

What are some wish list items you’re currently manifesting? Or anything you have recently purchased that you love?

I have two 'sickness' brands - IE I they make me feel sick with longing every time they drop a new collection, like I'll never have enough. I have to not let myself go on their website lest I bankrupt myself!  One is Rohé and the other is Nackiyé.

From Rohé I'm going to scoop up the Mandarin Jacket when it comes back into stock as its the perfect layer - it feels a bit vintage but also very put together:

Nackiye are about to drop their AW25 collection (I've got the intel) and I'm going to buy a leopard jacket and matching hat.

Lauren Rubinski the legendary jeweller has just opened a store in Paris where she also has her own line of shirts (another weakness of mine). I can't buy them online so it will have to be a trip on the Eurostar for me...

Could you tell us more about The Coven? What inspired you to launch it?

The Coven is a regular content series profiling interesting, fun, intelligent women that I admire and respect. It’s a platform allowing them to speak of their projects, work and passions but also about their friends, their own ‘Coven’ of women, and in turn offering those women a voice and a platform in an otherwise very crowded space. I launched The Coven as I wanted to give inspiring women an opportunity to speak about themselves and those in their circles, providing a platform where we can celebrate each other.

Each person I interview for my Coven is someone that I have genuine respect for, work with and support. Previous interviews are with Georgia Dant (Marfa Stance), Poppy Sexton Wainwright (ASCENO) and  Gabrielle Katz (Accent PR) and I’m so excited for my interview with Laurel Pantin to launch over the next month.

Can you share the story behind one piece of jewellery that holds special meaning for you?

I have a pair of vintage art-deco earrings that my husband Ed gifted me on my wedding day. I love them so much that when I was designing a pair of more dressy earrings for my own collection I recreated the silhouette, designing a pair of chunky cocktail earrings with a suspended collet of Victorian set diamond pavé - the Smartie earrings.

What emerging trends in fine jewellery are you excited about?

I recently read an article on the Business of Fashion around the rise of novelty fine jewellery and am noticing this being covered more and more in the media - I love that consumers are having more fun with their purchases, combining classic pieces with something that feels a little more different.

What’s your most-worn LD piece this season – and how do you style it?

Without a doubt it’s my Diamond Signet Ring - I went a few weeks not wearing it, and genuinely felt lost without it. When it comes to styling, more is more. I pair the ring with other pieces from my collection, normally the Bombé ring and a selection bespoke rings I’ve designed. for me it's about layering my vintage with my new pieces for something totally unique to me, that's what jewellery is truly about!

Who’s your current style crush?

Aimee Lou Wood - I love what she’s doing with her stylist Felicity Kay. Also, Alyssa Wasko the founder of Donni, stylist Elyse Winter, Alexis Badiyi, Melissa Jane Tarling and Leandra Medine forever

What jewellery are you wearing today?

Alongside my rings, I’m wearing two of my Bespoke Name Bangles. Each one is customised with my son’s names in my husband’s handwriting, and surrounded with their birthstones on each side - I never take these off. On my neck I’m wearing the Siren necklace (I’m not supposed to have favourites, but this is definitely one of them) with my Grandfather pocket watch in Cognac Diamond, which we recently launched on the website. What I love about Cognac Diamonds is that by day they are this beautiful peachy tone and then by night they fire up - it’s such a versatile stone and I love that they’re gaining popularity amongst our clients.
